Leadership Through Personal Development

Throughout my writings, I have discussed on numerous occasions about the need of being at ones best while leading. Rarely will one observe someone leading at the highest level with personal obstacles before them. As part of personal development with the aspiration of one day leading in a leadership position; always keep in mind the need for mentors and or respected confidantes.

Also, be prepared to recognize that accomplishments will not always be as you had planned and that there will be challenges and obstacles along the way. Also along the way in pursuit of your dreams there will be those to quickly claim perhaps your lack of qualifications for the job or the opportunity before you. There will also be those prepared to tell you that the chemistry is just not there or that you have poor writing skills.

I have known of individuals that are as equipped to handle a job and have prepared for a particular job only to be told they did not qualify. Discussions I have with colleagues in the field of teaching leadership development in some of the finest Universities in the country; are with the contention that one could only prepare so much. The point being; that at some point over preparation is useless. Sometimes we could over prepare and freeze up during a critical point in pursuit of that deal.

Others state that it is not about ones lack of preparation but rather the politics to an opportunity and so therefore one is better off moving on and excelling in the drive for accomplishing your dream. There is such a philosophy of searching, seeking and venturing until ones dreams come to fruition. At some point in one's life the situation will arise when a decision needs to be made, do I sacrifices my values and lose my perspective about what it is truly all about or do I go forth a pursue that dream?

It is important to keep in mind that the process of personal development in order to reach the status of leader is an insidious process. And, there will be factors that for some a leadership role could come early in a career; while for others it could come later in the career ladder. The critical issue to keep in mind is that the developmental stages of personal development and leadership are significantly noticeable decade by decade both physically and mentally.

What is meant by this is that from birth; we have learning phases that lead to developmental achievements. From a career pathway perspective one could observe significant accomplishments from teen's to 20's, 30's 40's and so on; and, never ever does the process cease to exists until the day that you stop breathing. You see I have yet to learn that there is a drop dead date for success probabilities; as long as the desire, drive and the commitment to reach a victorious outcome is present; then the possibilities are always reachable goal.

The concept of internalizing personal development issues in quest for leadership positioning or personal augmentation are factors that will require reflecting and redefining one's chosen career path options. There are numerous examples that can be discussed whereby people make a complete career switch in their fifth decade of life. Let's take a look at President Ronald Reagan who in his fifties went from being a movie actor to becoming a Governor of the State of California to becoming President of the United States. This remarkable feat is a testament to the virtues of having a sense purposes filled with an inspirational commitment to lead.

President Reagan had known for years that he wanted to be part of creating change; change to bring a cold war to an end, change to kick start a stagnating economy, change to instill a sense of pride in being an American and change to place America in a position as a respected influence worldwide. From the beginning he obviously knew what he wanted to do; as we are speaking about a man who was a member of the theater club while in High School and decides to obtain a degree in economics from Eureka College in Illinois, along the way learning the art of acting, broadcasting and being a polished speaker while working as a spokesman for General Electric. President Reagan furthered his skills in politics by being a seven time President of the Screen Actors Guild and learning the art of negotiations with the producers of the movie industry, therefore being well prepared for politics.

Jim Rohn: The No Excuse Guide To Success (Jim Rohn Personal Development)

►About Jim Rohn : Emanuel James Jim Rohn (September 17, 1930 – December 5, 2009) was an American entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker. Jim Rohn's rags to riches story played a large part in Jim Rohn's work, which influenced others in the personal development industry.

Emanuel James Jim Rohn was born in Yakima, Washington, to Emanuel and Clara Rohn. Jim Rohn's owned and worked a farm in Caldwell, Idaho, where Jim Rohn grew up as an only child.

Jim Rohn started Jim Rohn's professional life by working as a stock clerk for department store Sears. Around this time, a friend invited Jim Rohn's to a lecture given by entrepreneur John Earl Shoaff. In 1955, Jim Rohn joined Shoaff's direct selling business AbundaVita as a distributor.

In 1957, Jim Rohn resigned Jim Rohn's distributorship with AbundaVita and joined Nutri-Bio, another direct selling company. Influence - The Power of Experience

Influence - The Power of ExperienceA change of view on influence

My training style went though a radical change after I met and studied with Mel Silberman, the Father of Active training.

Mel is considered one of the greatest contributors to the field of adult training, has written many of the best selling books on training and had been a tireless advocate for "learning by doing".

So why is this important to influence?  Well, with the thousands of books on influence, persuasion and sales, most of the focus is on talk or verbal persuasion.

Yet recent research has shown that one of the most power forms of influence is experience...allowing someone to actually have an experience rather than a verbal description (this is why demonstrations are so powerful).

Change - Recognizing and Reframing Limiting Beliefs in Your Career

change-reframing limiting beliefsStumbling on a change gem

While looking for well written articles on change, I came across a little gem (with ballons no less) that addresses two of my favorite subject change (limiting beliefs) and careers.

Change can be dramatic and long lasting when a limiting belief is altered.

Many people's limiting beliefs are rooted in the language they use internally (yes, we all do talk to ourselves).  This internal language is usually not helpful and can be changed through a process called "reframing".  Reframing is the art/science of creating a change with a statement related to langauge being used.

Reframing Limiting Beliefs for change

In this little gem of an article, six limiting beliefs about career are addressed.  See if you can recognize any of these limiting beliefs in your "internal language" and read the reframe to find ourt for yourself if you gain a new perspective:

But career experts point out that your beliefs really do influence outcomes. Unless you first believe you can and will find the job or career you want, you'll end up defeating yourself. Here are six common career-limiting beliefs ...

If you're looking to change the way you think about your career, these reframes may work for you...or not. However, with the variety of new and different perspectives, you might gain some insight in how you can change your own limiting beliefs in  a new way.

Personal Development-EdAndriessen.comBy: Derek

Personal development is the pursuit of learning, developing, honing and mastering the skills that help you become the best that you can, with all that you have. It is the reaching for, and realizing of your full potential as a human being.

You want to live a full, productive life, but sometimes, you just don't know where to begin. There is so much information 'out there' that it can be overwhelming and hard to choose what is right for you.

Depending on your concerns what seems to work for one person, may not necessarily work for you.  There are so many different ideas, strategies, advice and techniques that it's hard to chose the right one.

One thing, however, is certain. If you want to achieve anything in your life and realize your full potential, you must have some practical and positive skills - life skills.

In order to excel at work, in a sport or in your relationships, you must acquire and master certain skills. Living your life fully, productively and with enjoyment is no different.

Crucially possessing life skills enables you to deal with the life's inevitable challenges and adversities more effectively.  It reduces your chances of procrastinating, finding yourself getting frustrated and stressed, engaging in addictive behaviors, and experiencing overall despair and hopelessness. When you have the proper tools and actions at your disposal, you have more control over your life and time making you happier and more confident.

Taking the first steps

Your first step is establishing a firm foundation. That foundation must be "you". You need to know who you are, what you want, and what you are capable of. You must then determine which values, goals and principles you will establish to guide your actions. (more…)
